Peds rad, surgical critical care fellows among UMMC's new faculty hires

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Alexandria Mullins Delozier, M.S.

Dr. Alexandria Mullins Delozier has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Division of Psychology.

After receiving her B.A. in psychology in 2014 and her M.S. in clinical psychology in 2016 at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Delozier completed her pre-doctoral internship at UMMC in 2019. She was awarded her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, with specialties in clinical child and pediatric psychology, by OSU in 2019.

The author or coauthor of 24 articles in peer-reviewed publication, 10 invited oral presentations and 26 poster presentations, Delozier’s research interests include factors impacting psychological and physical health disparities in gender and sex diverse youth and their families.

She serves as the research director and associate medical director for the UMMC Center for LGBTQ Health and the UMMC TEAM clinic, respectively.


R. Austin Dillard, M.D.

Dr. Austin Dillard, recently a pediatric radiology fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of radiology.

After receiving his B.S. in biological medical science magna cum laude with honors from Mississippi College in 2009, Dillard earned his M.D. in 2013 at UMMC, where he had an internal medicine internship from 2013-14. He also had a radiology residency and was chief resident in diagnostic radiology at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, and a pediatric radiology fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ohio.

An active member of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, Dillard has given two presentations at scientific meetings in Jackson and is the author or coauthor of five poster presentations and one scientific manuscript.


Joseph E. Doherty, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Joseph E. Doherty, recently a surgical critical care fellow at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of emergency medicine.

After receiving a B.S. in biology from James Madison University in 2003, Doherty spent two years doing research in pulmonary biochemistry at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He served as a volunteer for the Harrisonburg, Virginia Rescue Squad from 1999-2005. He earned a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology in 2012 and his M.D. in 2013 at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He then completed an emergency medicine residency in 2017 and a surgical critical care fellowship in 2019 at UMMC.

An active member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Doherty is the author or coauthor of eight articles in peer-reviewed professional publications.


John N. Freeman, M.D.

Dr. John N. Freeman, recently a pediatrics resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

Freeman attended the University of Southern Mississippi as a member of the Honors College on a full academic scholarship as a Presidential Scholar and graduated magna cum laude, earning a B.S. in biochemistry with a minor in biology.

After receiving his M.D. from UMMC in 2016, Freeman completed his pediatrics residency here in 2019. He received the S.T.A.R. Resident Award from the UMMC Department of Pediatrics in 2018 for teamwork and again in 2019 for reliability.

Freeman worked as a student researcher in the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics throughout his high school, undergraduate and medical school career. He is the author or coauthor of four peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous abstracts. He has given multiple poster and oral presentations at national and regional meetings. He recently gave a platform presentation at the 2019 Southern Regional Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.
